In an unprecedented incident, a public dispute between two officials in the Egyptian government was caught on camera — both audio and video — and broadcast on social media, putting the government in an awkward position.
Following this unusual incident, Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development decided to dismiss the Secretary-General of Sohag Governorate, Alaa Abdel Gaber, from his position after the public altercation with the Deputy Governor, Mohamed Abdel Hadi.
A video clip of the altercation, which happened during the inauguration of a mosque on Friday, spread across social media platforms, causing an uproar and prompting calls for swift action to address the situation.
A statement from the Ministry of Local Development stated that Minister Manal Awad issued the dismissal order based on investigations carried out by the ministry, following a report submitted by Governor Abdel Fattah Siraj.
The Minister stressed that “the sanctity of places of worship was not respected, especially during the presence in the mosque’s courtyard after its inauguration.” She stressed the “need for all employees in local administrative bodies across governorates to adhere to the duties of public service, the civil service code of conduct, and the rules and regulations governing public employment.”
