Hezbollah Critic, Lokman Slim, Found Shot Dead In His Car

A prominent Lebanese activist and intellectual known for his opposition to the Shiite movement Hezbollah was found dead in his car in the country’s south on Thursday, a security official said.

Lokman Slim had not been heard from by his family since getting in his car on Wednesday evening to drive back to Beirut.

“He was found dead in his car, killed by a bullet to the head,” a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Lebanese media also reported Slim’s death.

But Slim’s sister stated before his death was even confirmed his disappearance was inevitably connected to his opinions.“He had a political stance, why else would he have been kidnapped,” Rasha al-Ameer told AFP.

A journalist, political critic and activist is known as one of the front Shia voices criticising Hezbollah.

Interior minister Mohammed Fahmi, cited in local media, described Slim’s killing a “horrible crime”.

The Future Movement, led by Prime Minister Saad Hariri, denounced the assassination. “We warn of the risks of returning to a series of assassinations and targeting activists,” it said in a statement.
