Iranian Health Ministry announced on Sunday the country has identified the first COVID-19 case caused by the Omicron variant. According to state media, Deputy Minister of Health Kamal Heydari stated the infected person lives in Tehran and tested positive on returning from the United Arab Emirates, after which they were placed in quarantine and their contacts were traced.
Heydari added that Iran is currently in a “favorable situation” and that any new measures to curb the pandemic must cause “the least amount of damage.” The minister assured the country’s borders have been “strictly controlled” with vaccination and tests required for travelers flying into Iran.
