Ireland detects cases of new coronavirus strain

Ireland has recorded infections with the new variant of the coronavirus, first detected in the United Kingdom, country’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan revealed on Friday.

“I can confirm that we have detected the new UK variant of SARS-CoV-2 by whole genome sequencing at the National Virus Reference Laboratory in University College Dublin,” he maintained in a statement.

Dublin’s top medical expert affirmed that it remains to be decided to what extent the virus “is present” in Ireland, and urged the citizens to “avoid social contact and all forms of non-essential travel.”
