Ireland’s Varadkar resigns as prime minister

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar announced his resignation from the post on Wednesday, confirming previous reports by the Irish Independent. He detailed that he will be leaving “as soon as my successor can take up the office.”

During a press conference, Varadkar added that he will also be stepping down from his position as the Fine Gael leader, a party he has led since 2017. This decision is effective today.
