Israel starts cutting Palestinian electricity in West Bank, citing debts

Israel’s national electric company announced it has commenced decreasing power supplies to Palestinian areas of the West Bank due to a financial disagreement.
The Israel Electric Corporation said that it exerted the step because the Jerusalem District Electricity Co., the Palestinians’ main power distributor, has debts of approximately $485 million.
Ali Hamodeh, an official with the Palestinian distributor, says power is presumed to be cut for two hours every day in various Palestinian towns in the coming weeks.

Palestinian officials have decried the step as a form of “collective punishment,” according to the official PA Wafa news agency. On his part The chairman of the Palestinian Energy Authority, Zafer Melhem, said the Palestinian electric company had paid 374 million shekels and that the debt was only 700 million shekels
