Istanbul Protests: Turkish Police Arrest More Than 340 Protesters

The Turkish Ministry of Interior announced today, Saturday, the arrest of more than 340 individuals in connection with the Istanbul protests that erupted following the arrest of the city’s mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, on charges of corruption and terrorism.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on social media that 343 suspects were detained during protests in major cities on Friday night. He added, “There will be no tolerance for those who seek to violate public order, threaten citizens’ safety, and incite chaos and provocation.”

The Turkish news agency Anadolu reported that police incarcerated 56 individuals accused of inciting unrest through provocative social media posts. Simultaneous raids were carried out, resulting in the arrest of 56 people, while authorities continued searching for 38 others.

Today, Turkish police also interrogated Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on terrorism-related charges, a day after he was questioned over corruption allegations, according to the Associated Press.

The arrest of İmamoğlu last week sparked widespread protests across Turkey, with demonstrators gathering in several cities to express their opposition. Major cities involved in the protests include Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, Antalya, Çanakkale, Eskişehir, Konya, and Edirne.
