January 3, Earth to be closer to Sun than it will be during summer

The distance between the Earth and the Sun on January 3, 2024 (precisely 1h 39m local time) will be 147 million kilometres, the shortest of the year. This phenomenon is called perihelion.

The term “perihelion” refers to the point in the orbit of a planet or other astronomical body, at which it is closest to the sun. The word comes from Greek and means around (peri) the sun (helios)

The longest distance between the Earth and the Sun will be 152 million (early July), the longest during the year, a maximum value called “aphelion”.
