Kais Saied denounces dysfunctions of Municipal Services of Tunis

President of the Republic, Kais Saied, made a surprise visit this Thursday, June 27, 2024, to the municipal services of Tunis, emphasising heavy shortcomings and failures in the maintenance of public equipment and the management of services.

During his trip to the logistics sub-directorate of the municipality of Tunis, Kais Saied reported considerable irregularities. He remarked that several pieces of equipment have not been maintained or out of service for many years.

The observation of poor management and lack of maintenance was blatant.

Call for Responsibility

President Saied brought together several municipal officials at the Palace of the Municipality of Tunis after his review. He reminded them of their responsibility towards citizens and demanded rapid action to redress the situation.

Kais Saied insisted on the significance of improving waste collection, public lighting, and maintenance of cemeteries, parks and green spaces.

An unacceptable situation

Kais Saied voiced his dissatisfaction with the state of public services. He visited the Department of Health and Environmental Protection and the adjacent municipal nursery, formerly a sports and recreational space, now in a state of disrepair. “This place, once vibrant with activity, has become an abandoned space,” he recalled.

Call for reforms and the fight against corruption

The president concluded by saying that the state must undergo a comprehensive review of its services and that those responsible for these negligences must be held accountable.

Kais Saied insisted on the importance of eliminating corruption and improving public services, recollecting that some within institutions continue to sabotage.
