Kais Saied Makes a Surprise Visit to Tunis Markets: Observations and Exchanges with Citizens

On Sunday, March 2, 2025, Tunisian President Kais Saied visited several markets and sales points in Tunis, including Hay El-Zohour, Halfaouine, and Sidi Mahrez.

This tour, which coincided with the second day of Ramadan, aimed to evaluate market supply conditions, price levels, and the quality of goods available to consumers closely.

Market Conditions During Ramadan

During his visit, President Saied cited several irregularities, particularly regarding the high prices of essential goods like chicken, which many citizens deemed excessive. The visit provided an opportunity to assess the impact of recent measures taken to control price inflation and combat speculation, a growing issue each year during the holy month.

Engaging with vendors and consumers, Saied discussed the economic difficulties they face and emphasized the urgent need for action to ensure a more stable purchasing power. He also stressed the importance of transparency in managing the distribution of essential goods.

More than just an inspection, this tour allowed the president to hear citizens’ grievances firsthand. From rising prices to inconsistent product quality, the concerns voiced by residents of these working-class neighbourhoods reflect deeper economic and social challenges in Tunisia.

A Stop at Tunis’ Historic Sites

Beyond the markets, Kais Saied also visited several historic sites in Bab Souika, a district known for its rich architectural and cultural heritage.

According to the president, this historic part of the capital requires greater recognition and preservation to strengthen Tunisia’s national cultural identity.

A Strong Message During Ramadan

This visit is part of Saied’s broader effort to restore public trust in state institutions by enforcing stricter control over distribution networks and price regulations.

With Ramadan being a crucial time for many Tunisian families, the government remains focused on curbing speculation and protecting citizens’ purchasing power.

This on-the-ground assessment could lead to new measures to prevent price manipulation and regulate commercial practices during this period of high consumer demand.
