Le Drian: Recognition of Palestinian State has become a necessity

Former French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian announced, in an interview with the French newspaper “Le Parisien”, that the question of recognition of the State of Palestine is no longer taboo and that this recognition has become critical if we want to sustain the two-state solution, with secure and respectful borders, as he said.

Le Drian, who currently occupies the post of personal envoy of the French president to Lebanon, assessed that without this measure which would give new strength to the only possible political solution, the Middle East would stay in an endless war, which indiscriminately hits Palestinian citizens.

He stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not asking questions today about the principle of recognizing the State of Palestine, but rather about the most appropriate moment to do so.

Note that the current French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Ségornet, had emphasised that the recognition of a Palestinian state must be useful to advance the two-state solution, estimating, at the same time, that doing so now would not have any real impact on the pursuit of the two-state solution. And, in response to the announcement, Spain, Norway and Ireland recognize the State of Palestine.
