Legislative Initiative to Create a Support Fund for the Elderly

On April 15, 2025, a group of MPs in Tunisia introduced a legislative initiative proposing a bill to create, under the Ministry of Women, Family, Children, and Seniors, a Fund to support elderly people and protect their economic, social, political, health, cultural, and leisure rights, thereby enhancing their dignity.

The services of this new fund would be available to any Tunisian aged 65 or older who is unable to meet their basic life needs.

The proposed bill consists of six articles focused on safeguarding the rights of seniors, many of whom face social marginalisation. According to the document presented by the MPs, the percentage of elderly people in Tunisia has reached 11.4% of the population, with this trend anticipated to continue. It is projected that by 2030, the elderly population will make up 18%, and by 2034, 20.9% of the population.
