Loujain Al-Hathloul Is Released From Jail In Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has freed jailed activist Loujain al-Hathloul, best recognised for leading the campaign to authorise driving for women in Saudi Arabia, according to her family. She was held for approximately three years.

The 31-year-old activist was arrested in May of 2018.

In December, a judge convicted al-Hathloul to five years and eight months in prison.

The judge suspended a portion of her sentence, and granted time served for another part, leading to her release on Wednesday.

“Loujain is at home!!!!!!” Hathloul’s sister Lina tweeted on Wednesday, breaking the news that she had been released after 1,001 days in prison.

Another sister, Alia, wrote that “this is the best day of my life”.
