Macron: France seeking appeasement with Algeria

French President Emmanuel Macron insisted on Tuesday that Paris is seeking “appeasement” in its relations with Algeria in order to “move forward,” “recognize all the memories” from the 1954–62 war between the two countries, and “allow them to cohabit.”

“I have the greatest respect for the Algerian people, and I have really cordial relations with President Tebboune,” he told France Inter. He went on to claim the current tensions between the two nations to the memories that trace back to the war in which Algeria gained its independence from France.
