Mark Carney named Canada’s next prime minister

Mark Carney won the Liberal leadership race and will succeed Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister. The former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor secured a landslide win, receiving 85.9% of the vote.

Chrystia Freeland finished second with 8%, followed by Karina Gould at 3.2% and Frank Baylis at 3%. In his acceptance speech, Carney called on Canadians to serve their country, asking, “Who is ready to stand up for Canada with me?” before proclaiming that the Liberal Party is “united and strong.”
