Maziou: “We are not above the law and we demand respect for defence guarantees(Video)

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, the Dean of Tunisian Lawyers,Hatem Maziou highlighted the steadfast devotion of the Tunisian legal profession to its principles in defending rights, freedoms, and the right to defence by providing guarantees to attorneys. He noted that the voice of defence should be the voice of justice and freedom.

Maziou reported that on the occasion of the International Day of Lawyers at Risk, despite past pressures, the Tunisian legal profession will persist in its fight to defend rights, freedoms, and the application of the law, especially Articles 46 and 47 of the decree regulating the legal profession, which he considers a crucial national gain.

He underscored that international agreements and covenants also highlight the importance of guaranteeing the right to defence and the independence of the legal profession. Maziou addressed some referrals to lawyers, particularly while they are performing their work, urging the necessity of respecting the procedures against them.

Concerning referrals to Decree 54, the Dean of Lawyers stressed that lawyers are not above the law, but it is critical to respect the guarantees of defence and freedom of expression. He stated that any criticism should not necessarily lead to accountability, voicing opposition to abuse while advocating for freedom of expression. Al-Maziou emphasized the importance of expanding chests for criticism.

As a reminder, on the International Day of Lawyers at Risk, all bar associations worldwide celebrate January 24. This date coincided with the appearance of lawyer Sania Dahmani before the investigating judge in Tunis, following a complaint filed against her by Minister of Justice Leila Jaffal over her statements about the state of prisons.
