Monir Al-Sharfi: “Clear and serious plan must be put in place to deal with Tunisians returning from Syrian prisons” [Video]

During the rule of the Ennahda Movement, Tunisia witnessed a notable campaign of sending young people to so-called conflict zones, who are among the most extreme groups and can even be considered terrorists, Monir Al-Sharfi, head of the National Observatory for the Defense of the Civil State told Tunisie Numérique.

Al-Sharfi added that a large number of these people joined the terrorist organization ISIS in Syria during that period. He further clarified that many prisoners who were part of this organization have been released from Syrian prisons, including a large number of Tunisians estimated to be in the thousands.

He furthermore pointed out that a significant number of those released may return to Tunisia, which could pose challenges related to how to deal with them and the risk of them returning with terrorist plans.

In this context, Al-Sharfi called for caution concerning this issue and emphasized the necessity of establishing a clear and serious plan to address it.
