More than 7.2 million people could drown by 2050 if current trends continue

According to the first-ever report on drowning prevention issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), the global drowning mortality rate has dropped by 38% since 2000, which is a major advancement in global health.

However, the report emphasises that drowning remains a major public health problem, with more than 30 people drowning every hour and, in 2021 alone, 300,000 people drowned.
