Mustafa Abdel Kabir Calls for Resolution to Resume Trade at Ras Jedir Crossing

Speaking with Tunisie Numérique, head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, Mustafa Abdel Kabir, confirmed that Ras Jedir crossing has not been shut from the Libyan side, explaining that work at the crossing has been halted.

Abdel Kabir pointed out that the issue of closure is linked to a Tunisian-Libyan sovereign decision issued by the Ministry of Interior, the Border and Foreigners Administration in Tunisia, and the Crossings Administration in Libya, highlighting that ambulances and the movement of Tunisian and Libyan citizens are present today, but in a weak manner, due to the presence of demonstrations and the closure of several roads leading to the Ras Jedir crossing from the Libyan side, as well as the shooting in the air to create a kind of chaos to protest the failure to return trade exchange between the two countries.

Abdel Kabir added that, according to the Tunisian-Libyan deal concluded in June, commercial activity was scheduled to resume on August 10. Nevertheless, this plan was not implemented due to significant differences between the two sides concerning commercial exchange.

He further remarked that work at the Ras Jedir crossing has been halted multiple times, including five interruptions over the past month. This situation has caused real problems for both Libyan and Tunisian border areas, where commercial exchange is critical, particularly during important occasions such as Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.

Abdel Kabir called on the Presidency of the Republic and the Presidency of the Tunisian Government to find a solution to this situation and hold meetings with the Libyan brothers to overcome the difficulties and reach serious agreements that ensure the return of the Ras Jedir crossing to its previous activity.
