Official media announced today, Saturday, April 5, 2025, that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has increased to 3,354, with 4,850 injured and 220 missing.
On March 28, Myanmar was hit by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, one of the strongest the country has experienced in nearly a century. The quake struck a region inhabited by around 28 million people, causing the collapse of buildings, including hospitals, and leveling entire residential areas, leaving many without food, water, or shelter.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Friday that the ruling military council in Myanmar is restricting essential humanitarian aid for earthquake victims in areas it views as opposing its rule, according to the Al Arabiya news site.
The commission also reported that it is investigating 53 reports of attacks carried out by the military council on its opponents, including airstrikes, since the earthquake occurred.
This comes as the head of the military council, Min Aung Hlaing, returned to the capital, Naypyidaw after a rare foreign visit to attend a summit in Bangkok with South and Southeast Asian countries, where he also held separate meetings with the leaders of Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and India.
