In a statement issued on Thursday, March 20, the National Council of the Order of Physicians (CNOM) reminded that public defamation is a crime punishable by law. It stressed that freedom of expression should not be used as a pretext to harm the honour of the medical profession.
The CNOM urged anyone with reliable and verifiable evidence to submit it to the competent authorities. It condemned groundless accusations, describing them as an orchestrated smear campaign that damages the trust between doctors and patients.
In response to attacks on social media, the Council said that it will take strict legal action against the spread of false information. It called for responsibility and restraint in the use of social media and reaffirmed its commitment to defending the honour of the medical profession while upholding ethical principles and public service.
