The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification IPC Review Committee reported Tuesday that famine in Sudan has spread to five areas and is likely to reach five more by May 2025. Nearly half the population, 24.6 million people, now face acute food insecurity, with over 8 million in emergency conditions and 638,000 at catastrophic hunger levels.
The report says that the ongoing conflict in the country has displaced millions, disrupted agriculture, and delayed humanitarian aid, deepening the crisis. Famine, first detected in North Darfur’s Zamzam camp, has expanded to other camps and the Western Nuba Mountains, with further risks in parts of Darfur, Khartoum, and Al Jazirah states.
