A 7.3 magnitude earthquake has hit New Zealand triggering warnings of a possible hazardous tsunami.
The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck early on Friday.
It prompted warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center that tsunami waves were possible within 300 km (180 miles) of the earthquake’s epicentre.
