Libyan ambulance and emergency services reported that at least nine individuals were killed and 16 injured today, Friday, August 9, 2024, during clashes between two armed factions in Tajoura, east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
A Tajoura resident told Reuters in a phone call that he heard heavy gunfire before Friday prayers, adding that he was unable to leave the home due to the security situation.
He added, requesting that his identity not be disclosed for security reasons, that the shooting continued for a few hours before calm returned.
The rescue service released two short video clips showing its staff recovering a body.
So far, there is no information on the people implicated in the violence or the reasons for its outbreak.
The coastal area of Tajoura is located approximately 25 kilometres east of Tripoli.
Libya has been the scene of unrest since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi before divisions emerged in 2014 between warring factions in the east and west of the country.
