Omicron could break subpar health systems – WHO

It is wrong to operate under the assumption that the COVID-19 Omicron strain is less dangerous than its predecessors, as it can overwhelm unprepared health systems, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday.

During a media conference, he explained that the sheer speed at which the new variant spreads obliges the health authorities worldwide to take it seriously and approach it responsibly.

Omicron multiplies at “an unprecedented rate” and has already reached 77 countries, Tedros warned.
