Record Rainfall in Sayada: 147 mm in 24 Hours

Heavy rainfall continues to hit Tunisia, and the city of Sayada, located in the governorate of Monastir, has been significantly impacted in the last 24 hours. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), 147 mm of precipitation was registered in this city between 18 and 19 October 2024. These heavy rains caused flooding and disrupted residents’ daily lives.

The most affected areas
In addition to Sayada, other regions of Tunisia have also been affected by this bad weather. The governorates of Sousse, Mahdia, Cap Bon and the Sahel in general have experienced notable rain, although the amounts recorded are less than those recorded in Sayada.

The extreme rainfall registered in such a short time poses serious challenges for local infrastructure, especially in terms of water drainage. Local authorities and emergency services are on high alert to deal with potential flooding and minimise material damage.

Consequences of heavy rains
These episodes of heavy rainfall, although beneficial for recharging groundwater, pose a considerable risk of flash flooding in some urban and rural areas. The authorities call on citizens to be vigilant and avoid non-essential travel in affected areas.

Upcoming forecasts
According to the INM, weather conditions are predicted to remain unstable in the coming days, with locally intense thunderstorms forecast in several other regions of the country. Precipitation is expected to be concentrated mainly in the north and centre, with a risk of hail in some localities.
