Rihili: “Current infrastructure is not prepared to handle large amounts of rain, which may cause flooding” [Video]

In a statement to Tunisie Numériquethe expert in development and resource management revealed that the climatic conditions this week and the previous weekend are extremely suitable for significant rain, with distribution remaining similar to late August, as the rain concentrated in coastal areas and the central and southeastern regions. This is mainly due to climate change.

He added that new development for this period is the registered amounts of rain in the northwestern region and the far north, which are considered significant, although their effect on reservoir resources has been weak.

The speaker noted that the rainfall experienced in Sousse, Monastir, Nabeul, Sfax, and the areas of Djerba, Jerjis, and Dhehiba is quite significant and has occurred in a short period. Nevertheless, he cautioned that the current infrastructure is still not prepared to handle large amounts of rain in brief periods, and the intensity of the rainfall could lead to flooding.

He urged a review of the use, collection, and exploitation of the water provided by the rains in these areas, given the water scarcity the country is experiencing.
