The International Skating Union (ISU) revealed on Tuesday it stripped the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) of the gold medal won in the mixed figure skating event at the 2022 Winter Olympics after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) discovered that one of the team members, Kamila Valieva, used prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.
Following the WADA’s decision, the ICU removed Valieva’s results from all the competitions she participated in in the five years beginning December 25, 2021, including the Olympics in Beijing. With her scores erased, the ROC dropped to third place and will be given the bronze medal instead. The gold medal was awarded to the United States, and the silver to Japan.
