Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny was convicted to 3 and a half years in jail on Tuesday for violating the terms of his probation, nevertheless, his attorneys will appeal the decision. The court further recognized Navalny had already served a year under house arrest, meaning his prison sentence would be reduced to 2 and a half years.
Navalny was arrested on January 17 upon returning to Moscow from Germany, where he underwent treatment for poisoning, which he alleged was carried out on orders from the Kremlin. The Moscow court where he was sentenced was guarded by heavy security, while local media reported over 200 people have been arrested in its vicinity.
