Russian war against Ukraine: Present situation (Ukrainian Embassy in Tunisia)

THE ESSENCE OF RUSSIAN POLICY

  • Russia ignores the established norms of civilized coexistence of countries but appeals to international law and justice as soon as it can benefit from it.
  • Russia demands greater “recognition” and exclusive rights. At the same time, it accuses the West of “hegemony.” By launching hybrid wars, Russia presents itself as a victim of aggression. By attacking others, it declares its defence.
  • Russia hides under the guise of a fighter against colonialism. However, it seeks hegemony in the African countries, demonstrates its imperial neocolonialism in Ukraine.
  • Putin’s regime has eradicated freedom of speech in Russia and the propaganda machine financed by it uses the right to freedom of expression, inviolable in other countries, to impose its own destructive narrative.

RUSSIAN ATTACK ON CIVILIAN VESSEL

  • On November 8, Russia attacked a cargo ship under the flag of Liberia, which was moored in the port of Odesa Oblast. The pilot was killed, another crew members (citizens of the Philippines and Ukraine) were injured.
  • Russia deliberately attacked a civilian foreign vessel that had nothing to do with the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The purpose of the Russian terrorist attack is to block the operation of Ukrainian ports and stop the movement of merchant ships by a temporary sea corridor. This is another blatant attempt by Moscow on global food security.
  • In accordance with the norms of international maritime law, the actions of Russia qualify as maritime piracy and deserve new sanctions on the part of the international community.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION OF UKRAINE

  • On November 8, the European Commission officially recommended opening negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
  • The decision of the European Commission is a historic event, a landmark on the path of Ukraine’s European integration. After obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership, Ukraine needed a year and a half of reforms to achieve this result.
  • Despite Russian aggression and permanent information war, Ukraine is confidently moving forward through reforms and democratic transformation.
  • Ukraine expects to start formal accession negotiations already during the EU summit in December 2023.
