S. Africa appeals to ICJ over Israel’s op in Rafah

The South African government reported on Tuesday that it has submitted an urgent appeal to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s decision to extend its military operations in Rafah.

South Africa believes that Israel’s Rafah offensive may lead to a potential breach of the rights of Palestinians in Gaza, the Genocide Convention and the Court’s Order of 26 January 2024 and it urged the ICJ to intervene to prevent any further breaches.

“In a request submitted to the court yesterday (12 February 2024), the South African government said it was gravely concerned that the unprecedented military offensive against Rafah, as announced by the State of Israel, has already led to and will result in further large scale killing, harm and destruction,” the statement reads.
