Spain calls for int’l peace conference on Gaza

Spanish Foreign Ministry Jose Manuel Albares called on Monday to organize an international peace conference dedicated to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Speaking during the Union for the Mediterranean’s (UfM) summit in Barcelona, Albares noted that Israel’s campaign against Hamas leaves behind a lot of civilian casualties. Still, he insisted that Hamas cannot be a reliable partner as it does not seek peace and that that role can only be fulfilled by the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

Recently, Israel accused Spain of supporting terrorism after the latter country’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned about civilian casualties in Gaza, a claim that Madrid rejected.
