Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told Spanish representatives on Wednesday that recognition of a Palestinian state was “a geopolitical interest for Europe.”
He reiterated that Spain is “ready” to recognize a Palestinian state, without specifying a date for this. He emphasised that Israel’s “totally disproportionate” reaction in the Gaza Strip to the “Hamas terrorist attack” of October 7 threatens “the stability of the Middle East and the entire world.”
The Spanish government declared on Tuesday that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez would meet with a number of his European Union counterparts over the next week to try to mobilise support for the recognition of a Palestinian state.
Government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria told reporters that Sánchez’s agenda includes meetings with the prime ministers of Norway, Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia and Belgium, examining the position of the European Union concerning the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
She added: “We desire to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and help launch a political peace process that will lead to a two-state solution as quickly as possible.”
