Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa (pictured) left the country amid protests sparked by the economic crisis, AFP reported citing officials.
According to the report, Rajapaksa flew out of Sri Lanka together with 14 of his family members after two failed attempts to leave the country earlier this week.
On Saturday, Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena stated Rajapaksa is planning to resign in response to months-long unrest in the country to ensure a “peaceful transition of power.” Rajapaksa is set to officially leave his post on Wednesday.
