Strong earthquake kills 17 people and wound 709 in Turkey

At least 709 people were confirmed wounded in Turkey and rescue efforts were underway in 17 buildings in Izmir.

Rescue workers struggled late into the night on Friday in a desperate effort to save people caught under debris in the western Turkish city of Izmir many hours after a major earthquake in the Aegean Sea.

At least 17 people were killed in the earthquake, which had a magnitude up to 7.0.
