In a statement to Tunisie Numérique on Monday, Civil Protection spokesperson Brigadier Moez Taria stated that, in response to the weather updates from the National Institute of Meteorology predicting notable rainfall in parts of southeastern, northeastern, and central-eastern Tunisia during the night, Civil Protection has called on its regional units to take required measures to guarantee the safety of citizens.
Taria added that Civil Protection has furthermore instructed its units to remain on high alert and to set advanced posts in certain areas if necessary. He mentioned that the regional disaster response committees in the affected regions are currently in session, with some areas, such as the governorate of Tataouine, suspending afternoon classes in certain districts as a precautionary measure.
Among the actions taken in some regions is securing the “blue zones” identified as high-risk areas to ensure the safety of citizens.
The brigadier also cautioned citizens to avoid risky behaviour, such as crossing or staying near rivers, specifically children and the elderly, during and after the rainfall. He also urged the public not to touch electrical poles during or after the rain. He stressed that both drivers and pedestrians should avoid crossing rivers, as water levels of just 50 cm can cause a light truck to be swept away, as he noted.
