In a statement to Tunisie Numerique today, Friday, Civil Protection spokesperson Brigadier General Moez Taria confirmed that heavy rain was registered in a short period across northern, northwestern, and other regions in coastal and central governorates, as predicted by the National Institute of Meteorology.
Taria noted that this rain caused rising river water levels, water accumulation on roads, and flooding in some shops, houses, and other spaces. Civil Protection units intervened to help citizens, removing numerous vehicles stuck on public roads, evaluating areas where water had infiltrated, and pumping it out where required. Assistance was also provided to assist citizens across certain areas, such as Sidi Bou Rouis in the Siliana governorate and Hammamet in the Nabeul governorate.
Taria also reported fatalities due to the weather conditions. A 50-year-old man was swept away by floodwaters after trying to cross Wadi Et-Tin in Nabeul on a motorcycle. Additionally, a lightning strike in El-Besbasiya in Hammamet, Nabeul, caused the death of a 31-year-old woman and wounded her sister, who sustained head injuries.
Furthermore, yesterday, the body of a 26-year-old woman was retrieved in Gaafour, Siliana, after she was swept away by the waters of Wadi El-Hanshir.
The Civil Protection spokesperson urged all citizens to adjust their behaviour during and after rainfall and in cases of flooding. He cautioned against attempting to cross or approach rivers and emphasized the importance of watching over children and the elderly.
