Swiss Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan was convicted on appeal by the Geneva Court of Justice to three years in prison, including twelve months of imprisonment, for rape and sexual coercion. This decision overturned the verdict by the criminal court in May 2023, which had initially acquitted him.
The Geneva Court of Justice found Ramadan guilty of almost all of the facts reported by the complainant, therefore confirming the accusations brought against him. This conviction follows a prolonged judicial process, with allegations dating back to 2008.
The case has taken on a media profile due to the notoriety of Tariq Ramadan, an influential figure of Islam in Europe. Despite his rejections throughout the trial, the Swiss justice system considered that the proof was sufficient to convict him.
This decision marks a turning point in a complex case that continues to attract international attention.
