Transport in Tunisia: New Measures for a Modernized Network

Minister of Transport, Rachid Amri, has announced a set of measures and projects to modernize public transportation, port infrastructure, and Tunis-Carthage Airport. These initiatives seek to meet the growing needs of citizens while supporting the country’s economic development.

Expansion of Tunis-Carthage Airport: A New Facility for 8 Million Passengers

A flagship project for the extension of Tunis-Carthage Airport is underway. A new terminal will be built adjacent to the existing one, covering 80,000 m².

  • Capacity: The new facility will accommodate 8 million passengers annually.
  • Objective: Address the growing demand for air travel and provide modern amenities for travellers.
  • Current Phase: Detailed studies are in progress to ensure optimal project execution.

This strategic project is fixed to position Tunis-Carthage as a competitive airport hub aligned with international standards.

Enhancement of the Bus Fleet for Improved Services

By the end of 2024 and throughout 2025, the “Tunis Transport” bus fleet will be greatly expanded to restore regular service across all routes.

Key measures include:

  • 56 additional buses by the end of 2024.
  • A repair program has already rehabilitated 113 buses out of 200 planned.
  • 180 used buses donated by France will be delivered in 2025.
  • 84 new buses will be purchased for regional companies by the end of 2024.
  • 590 additional buses will be procured over the next two years for regional and intercity transport.

Progress in Rail Transport: Line D to Launch by End of 2024

The Rapid Rail Network (RFR) is gearing up for a significant milestone with the imminent launch of Line D, connecting Tunis to Kbairia via Bardo.

  • Estimated capacity: 20,000 passengers daily, equivalent to the capacity of 50 buses or 600 private cars.
  • Impact: Reduced traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions in the capital.

All required testing is underway to ensure the line opens before the end of the year.

Development of Port Infrastructure

In the maritime sector, major initiatives were outlined:

  1. Modernization of commercial ports: An ambitious project to upgrade logistical infrastructure and meet global trade demands.
  2. Deepwater port at Enfidha: Efforts are underway to secure a strategic partner for this critical project, deemed essential for Tunisia’s commercial development.
