A tsunami advisory was issued on Samoa after an earthquake shook the Samoan Islands region on Sunday, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. People are being urged to avoid beaches.
The earthquake is of 6.7-magnitude, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. It struck at a depth of 36.0 kilometres, with an epicentre 141 kilometres east-north-east of the town of Hilfo, Tonga.
There is no tsunami threat to Marianas, Palau, Micronesia or Marshalls at this time and, according to the country’s news service Newshub, there is currently “no threat to New Zealand.”
