The 2nd Criminal Chamber of the Court of First Instance in Tunis has convicted former Minister of Justice Noureddine Bhiri to ten years in prison, according to columnist Riadh Jrad. Bhiri was found guilty of conspiracy against state security, incitement to civil disobedience, and calling for insurrection.

The case dates back to January 2023, when Bhiri posted a highly inflammatory remark on social media, inciting rebellion and uprising. His publication, perceived as a call for sedition, sparked widespread controversy across the nation. Bhiri’s call for “nifâr” (rebellion) and acts of civil disobedience resulted in serious accusations being levelled against him.
Conspiracy and Incitement Charges
The court ruled that Bhiri’s statements formed a conspiracy to disrupt state order. He was also charged with trying to alter the government structure by force and inciting the population to engage in violence against one another.
