Maritime Guard on Monday rescued 113 illegal immigrants of different nationalities when their boat was on the edge of drowning northeast of Taqermas, about 40 kilometres from the coast of the island of Djerba, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense Major Mohamed Zakri told Tunisie Numérique’s correspondent in the region.
Their age varies between 15 and 38 years.
According to the same source, they include 46 people from Bangladesh, 29 Sudanese, 22 Eritreans, 11 Egyptians, two Moroccans, two Ghanaians and one person from Nigeria.
They sailed on Sunday night from Libya toward the European coast.
The immigrants were handed over to the Maritime Guard at the commercial port in Zarzis, while the Red Crescent undertook the completion of the required health procedures before housing them in accommodation under foreign humanitarian structures.
