A unit of the national navy managed to save 16 illegal migrants from drowning on Sunday after their boat was flooded with water, 65 km southwest of the village of El Attaya (island of Kerkennah)
In a statement released on Monday, the defence ministry said the migrants in question are aged 13 to 46 and are of Tunisian nationality.
The migrants said they sailed on Sunday at dawn from the Zarzis coast to reach the Italian coast illegally.
They were taken back to the port of Zarzis where they were handed over to the units of the National Guard to make the necessary arrangements against them.
