The regional director of civil protection in Bizerte, Colonel-Major Kamel Melliti, announced that during the first half of this August, the number of forest fires in the region reached 25, an increase of 11 fires compared to the same period of the previous year.
He said that while the fires did not cause damage to people or to the public and private property of residents and were prevented from reaching buildings, they ravaged about 190 hectares of forest material (an increase of 155 hectares of losses during the same period last year).
Col. Major Melliti added that the number of grass fires recorded in the region has seen an increase of 11 fires after recording 55 fires in the last season, on 28 hectares of grass surface, while it had grown to 40.5 hectares during the first half of this month.
