Tunisia- 3,300 cases of breast cancer recorded in 2019

3300 new cases of breast cancer were recorded in Tunisia in 2019, Health Minister Faouzi Mahdi said on Monday, adding that this type of cancer represents 30% of all cancers diagnosed.

Speaking during a meeting at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Tunis on “the role of the first lines of health in the fight against breast cancer in the light of the coronavirus pandemic”, the minister stressed the importance of early detection of breast cancer to increase the chances of a cure.

He pointed out that 40% of tumours are detected at an advanced stage (5 centimetres in diameter), which complicates, he said, the healing process and increases the risk of death, calling on women to prevent cancer breast by favouring breastfeeding, adopting a healthy eating behaviour, practising physical activity and making regular check-ups. He also stressed the need for physicians in basic health care centres operating in all regions to sensitize women and regularly monitor their health for signs of breast cancer.
