Tunisia: Adoption of laws for implementation of biometric documents

The House of People’s Representatives, on Wednesday evening, endorsed two important legislative measures aimed at introducing the national identity card and the biometric passport in Tunisia. These amendments target two current laws: Law 27 of 1993, which governs the national identity card, and Law 40 of 1975, which pertains to passports and travel documents.

The bill involving the national identity card was passed by a substantial majority, with 107 votes in favour, 3 against, and 4 abstentions. Similarly, the proposal related to biometric passports garnered 107 affirmative votes, with 3 against and 2 abstentions.

This legislative move represents a key step towards modernizing Tunisia’s identity verification systems.
