Tunisia-BCT rejects any proposal to finance the budget deficit

BCT governor Marouane Abassi confirmed his implicit opposition to finance the 2020 supplementary budget deficit without “guarantees”, following a request from the government.

During a session held this Thursday, November 5, 2020 at the Parliament , Abassi underlined his attachment to maintaining the current level of inflation which, according to him, has been subdued in recent years thanks to a well-defined monetary policy that has enabled the achievement of financial stability.

He added that this stability, obtained through a strict monetary policy in addition to the formation of a large reserve of currency, cannot be altered.

Commenting on the recent speech of the Head of Government,he indicated that the creation of controversy on the independence of the central bank is useless, recalling that the latter did not finance the State and the Treasury since 2006 or even before.

“They have closed the oil and phosphate valves, and they want to open another one,” he said.
