Tunisia-Bedbugs in Tunisia: Details from Ministry of Health

Concerns are beginning to emerge in Tunisia as outbreaks of bedbugs have been caught sight of in university dormitories. The Ministry of Health provides details.

Samir Ouerghmi, director of environmental health and environmental protection at the Ministry of Health, declared this Friday, November 10, 2023, that the alert system set up by the ministry to detect bedbugs after their spread in several European countries has demonstrated its effectiveness. He indicated that the notification received by the ministry’s services concerning the presence of bedbugs in two university residences in Kasserine is proof of this.

Speaking on Mosaïque FM, the official clarified that the relevant ministry services intervened after receiving two warnings concerning the presence of bedbugs in two private university residences in Kasserine. It turned out that there were only bed bugs in one institution and on a limited basis. “These are non-imported bedbugs,” he said, asserting that essential measures have been taken.

Regarding the notification of the presence of these insects in a private residence in Sousse, he explained that the inspection proved that this notification was untrue. He indicated that these bedbugs had already been detected in the same residence a month ago and that all measures and precautions had been taken to eliminate them.

Regarding the reasons for the appearance of these insects in private residences in particular, Ouerghmi said that these places house different people and are not necessarily students. Moreover, the owners of these residences do not care much about providing furniture with particular specifications, he said.
