A statue depicting the “Caretta Caretta” sea turtle will be inaugurated on July 18 in El Kram
This action started together with the El Kram Association of Development and Environment (ADEK) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is part of the Sea Turtles in the Mediterranean (SEA TU Med) programme, the WWF announced in a press release.
Started by the WWF Tunisia-North Africa in conjunction with the National Agency for Coastal Protection (French: APAL) and the National Institute for the Sciences and Technologies of the Sea (INTSM), the “SEA TU MED” is a communication programme on the conservation of sea turtles in Tunisia.
Financed by the MAVA Foundation, the programme strives to increase awareness against the illegal trade and the consumption of sea turtle in Tunisia.
Assembling a consortium of 14 Tunisian associations, the “SEA TU MED” programme directly targets fishers, fishers’ families, young fishers and the general public.
In Tunisia, sea turtles are preserved by the law on the protection of cetaceans (Law No.94-13 of July 31, 1994), as well as by a decree issued by the Agriculture Ministry on September 28, 1995, regularising the practice of fishing activities.
