Tunisia: Bouderbala warns against artificial intelligence

House speaker Brahim Bouderbala, alerted of “the dangers represented by the excessive and inappropriate usage of artificial intelligence, whether individually or collectively”, in an address delivered yesterday Saturday April 27, 2024 before the sixth conference of the Arab Parliament and the presidents of Arab councils and parliaments held in Cairo (Egypt), under the theme “An Arab parliamentary vision to achieve secure use of artificial intelligence”.

In his speech delivered by his first vice-president, Anouar Marzouki, Bouderbala called for “finding ways to stop algorithms employed to violate human rights, data confidentiality and personal information, and to avoid to reproduce social and cultural stereotypes common in artificial intelligence programs, such as discrimination between genders or based on race or colour, in addition to determining legal and ethical responsibility in the event of negative effects of a decision made by an artificial intelligence system.

According to a press release published by parliament, Bouderbala insisted on “the necessity to progress in the development of suitable laws, public policies and administrative systems that govern artificial intelligence technologies, supervise them and improve their governance to avoid risks.

He also suggested supporting and strengthening collaboration at the level of the Arab Parliament and the level of national parliaments so that Arab countries are among the countries producing artificial intelligence technologies and content to progress towards the status of designer, manufacturer and source, thus going beyond the role of supplier and consumer of this technology.
